Abstract

524,378. Ultra-violet absorbing filters for photographic material. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co.). Jan. 23, 1939, No. 1395/40. Divided out of 524,320. [Class 98 (ii)] Photographic material comprises a support carrying one or more light-sensitive emulsions and a filter layer outside the emulsion or emulsions consisting of an ultra-violet absorbing substance in a carrier colloid which is completely dissolved in an alkali in a period of time within which and under conditions such that the emulsion is substantially undissolved. The colloid may be soluble in an alkaline developer, and may be a synthetic resin or cellulose derivative, for example condensation products of polyhydroxy compounds and polybasic acids having sufficient free carboxyl groups, such as glycerol-phthalic anhydride resins, polyvinyl alcohol succinic acid resins, polyvinyl phthalate resins, or polyvinyl acetate phthalate resins ; hydrolyzed polyvinyl esters having sufficient hydroxyl groups, such as hydrolyzed polyvinyl acetate ; polyacrylic acid resins or copolymers of maleic anhydride and vinyl acetate ; and cellulose mono-esters of dibasic acids and mixed esters of monobasic and dibasic acids or esters of hydroxy acids, such as cellulose phthalate, cellulose acetate-phthalate, cellulose propionate-succinate, and cellulose glycollate. The ultra-violet absorbing substance may absorb in the region 350 to 400 ÁÁ or in the region 400 to 450 ÁÁ or in both and may be one of the substances described in Specifications 524,320, 524,377 or 524,379 ; aesculin ; naphthalene, phenanthrene, or anthracene or their derivatives such as α-or #-naphthylamine ; or soluble colourless salicylates or nitrates, in particular the sodium salts. The material may have a number of emulsions on the same side of a single support with the filter layer coated on the emulsions.
