Abstract

524,343. Centrifugal separators. MUTCH, N. Jan. 27, 1939, No. 2907. [Class 23] Particles dispersed in a fluid medium are separated from the medium, or graded, by causing the mixture to flow at a controlled speed in a direction contrary to the tendency to motion of the particles under centrifugal force. The passages through which the mixture flows have varying sectional areas such that the cross-sectional area at any point is inversely proportional to its distance from the axis of rotation. One form of apparatus is shown in Figs. 3, 4 and has a rotating wheel 14 in which blades 15 are arranged between upper and lower walls 16, 17 to form the passages which diverge from the periphery towards the centre. Four inlets 13 are provided in the casing surrounding the wheel; they are practically tangential to the wheel and the small parts of the casing between them has outlet ducts 19 into which the coarser material is thrown. A conduit 21, Fig. 5, may be provided at the forward end of each inlet to draw off any coarse material deposited in the inlet. The fine material passes through with the medium to a central outlet. In a modification the inlets 13 instead of being in the plane of the wheel, as shown, are inclined to that plane, and their mouths are provided with guide blades. Where the suspended particles are lighter than the medium the direction of flow is reversed. To separate various grades of particles passages of the type shown in Fig. 2 are used. This has an axis XY of rotation and the first part AB has a cross-sectional area varying inversely as the distance from the axis. The part BC diverges more rapidly than this and the part CD again expands with the cross-sectional area varying inversely as the distance from the axis. This alternate arrangement of sections continues as far as desired and the maximum size of particles able to pass through the parts AB, CD, EF diminishes. The particles able to pass through the section AB but not through the section CD collect in the section BC and similar action occurs in the other parts.
