Abstract

523,560. Ships' hatch co vers ; hinges. SWENY, W. H. P., and SILLEY, H. A. J. Jan. 4, 1939, No. 333. [Class 113 (i)] [Also in Group XXV] A hatch cover is hinged to the edge of the hatch opening in such a manner that, when the cover is closed it lies flush with the deck. The hatch and hatch cover construction comprises a metal flange 22, Fig. 3 extending above the deck plating 21 and level with the deck planking 24, a flange 28 extending above the hatch cover plating 29 and level with the hatch cover planking 30 and deck planking 24 and adapted to abut the flange 22, a drainage gutter 25 for water leaking between the flanges 22, 28 and a support, e.g. the upper edge of the gutter 26, for the hatch cover when in place. The cover may be in one or more sections hinged to the edge of the hatch opening by hinges permitting disconnection of the cover when it is in closed position but not when in open position. This hinge construction comprises a strap 39 fixed to the cover and having a part cylindrical bearing portion 34 engaging a socket 38 let into the deck. Semi-cylindrical lugs 42, Fig. 6 extending from the ends of the part 34 are adapted when the cover is opened to engage beneath projections 44, Fig. 5, in the socket 38 but can pass freely vertically out of the socket when the cover is closed. The cover may be fastened in closed position by blades 47, Fig. 7 integral with spindles 48 rotatable by a wrench to turn the blades through slots 52 in the flanges 22, 28 into engagement with wedge plates 54 fixed to the cover plating 29. An alternative form of fastening operable from below deck comprises a sliding bolt 56, Fig. 10 adapted to engage a staple 59 on the cover and locked by a pawl 64 engaging a slot 63 in the bolt. The pawl can be raised and the bolt withdrawn by means of the bar 60 inserted in the slot 63 and levered against a fulcrum 61 on the bracket-57 fixed to the deck and carrying the bolt. In the case of a hatch cover in two sections hinged to opposite edges of the hatch opening, the meeting edges of the sections are provided with metal flanges 67, Fig. 13 beneath which is arranged a drainage channel 69 leading at its ends to the drainage channels 25 at the sides of the opening. The channel 25 may contain greasy hemp packing 31, Fig. 3.
