Abstract
523,060. Aerials. CORK, E. C., and DEAN, J. N. Dec. 23, 1938, No. 37403. [Class 40 (v)] An aerial comprises a core of insulating material about which are applied layers of conducting material arranged in endto-end relation, adjacent ends of conductor being overlapped and insulated from one another so as to afford capacity loading. As shown in Fig. 1 a central core 10 ot string or rope or other insulating material of good tensile strength is provided and about this are braided sheaths 11 of copper wire, successive sheaths 11 being separated by gaps 12, Fig. 3, of length slightly less than that of the sheaths 11. Over the sheaths 11 is a layer 13 of thermo plastic low-loss insulating material over which are braided further conducting sheaths 14 so as to overlap the sheaths 11 and form the plates of condensers of which the insulating material 13 forms the dielectric. The sheaths 14 may be protected by a further insulating layer. Each time a complete sheath 11 has been braided the machine is stopped and a split disc 15, Fig. 3, of flexible or springy material is slipped over the core under the braiding wires, the disc having an inner aperture 16, Fig. 4, which grips the central core 10. The machine is then restarted and the next sheath is braided. The braiding is bound at points 18 on each side of the disc 15 to form bindings 19, Fig. 1, and the wires are then cut adjacent to the bindings and the disc 15 and the wires formed round it are removed. Alternatively the conductive sheaths 11, 14 may be formed by taping or wrapping sheets of conductor about the core. The layer of insulating material 13 may be replaced by a braided or taped layer of impregnated textile material. In a modification the conductive sheaths 11, 14 may all be applied directly on the core, the overlapping portions being separated by pads of insulating material. Specifications 490,414 and 493,758 are referred to.
