Abstract
522,729. Catalytic hydrogenation. HOWARDS & SONS, Ltd., BLAGDEN, J. W., and CLARK, G. C. Sept. 30, 1938, No. 28455. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] Mannitol is made by the catalytic hydrogenation of fructose in the presence of another polyhydroxy compound such as a carbohydrate, a sugar alcohol or a glycol; for instance invert sugar may be used. The hydrogenation may be effected at 50-110‹C. with a nickel or cobalt catalyst. In an example a nickel catalyst is prepared by reducing in hydrogen a basic nickel carbonate containing magnesium in the ratio 93:7 and an aqueous solution of equal quantities of fructose and glucose is hydrogenated in the presence of this catalyst at 80‹C. and 15 atmospheres pressure. Specification 430,576 is referred to.
