Abstract

522,705. Setting projectile fuzes. STONE, A. A., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Dec. 13, 1938, No. 36348. [Class 9 (i)] Apparatus for setting time fuzes of the kind having a fixed and a rotary ring, comprises two carriers having axes coincident with the axis of the projectile and having elements adapted to engage within notches in the rings, means to rotates both carriers in the same direction and at the same rate for an angular distance greater than 360 degrees, means to prevent engagement of the second locating element with the fixed ring during the first 360 degrees and means responsive to such engagement thereafter to interrupt the driving means. The locating means comprises spring-pressed pawls 16, 17 carried on discs 5, 6 mounted for rotation within a fixed cylindrical casing 1 part of which forms an internal gear 2. A ring 3 also mounted within the casing 1 is formed with an internal gear 4. Pinions 8 and 7 carried by the discs 5, 6 respectively mesh with the gears 2, 4 and also with sun gears 9, 10 driven from a shaft 13 through gears 11, 12 so that the discs rotate together. A cam 24 also driven from the shaft 13 acts on one end of a pivoted lever 21 to control the axial position of the sun gear 10. During the first complete revolution of the discs, the sun gear 10 is in a position such that a groove therein engages an abutment 18 on the pawl 17 preventing the pawl from engaging the notch in the fixed ring. The pawl 16 however engages the notch in the movable ring. After the first revolution, the sun gear 10 is withdrawn, the pawl 17 engages the fixed ring and the rotation of the shaft 13 is halted, clutch teeth 15 moving apart under the strain. Before a second setting operation, the shaft 13 must be turned back to the original position, a stop being provided for this purpose. The angular relation between the pawls 16, 17 may be adjusted by rotating the disc 6 through a graduated handwheel 27, worm 270, worm wheel 28 and spur gear 29 which rotates the ring 3.
