Abstract

522,383. Number-printing apparatus. JONES, K. W. Dec. 7, 1938, No. 35666. [Class 100 (ii)] In a number-printing apparatus in which the advance of the numbers is effected by the passage of an operating roller or pin through a cam track, the track comprises a fixed member forming one wall of the track, and a movable member operated automatically to assume two positions in one of which it provides the other wall of the cam track and in the other of which it prevents movement of the roller into the cam track and directs it into a path in which it is inoperative to change the number wheels. In one form, Fig. 4, the movable member 6 is carried by a slotted lever 21 engaged by a pin 11 on an arm 12 fixed to a rock shaft 13 actuated by a cam to move the member 6 to the position shown in full lines in, which it, forms, with a fixed member 5, a cam track for the roller of the numbering box which is mounted on a rotary drum, or to move the member 6 to the dotted line position in which it closes the entry to the cam track and causes the roller to travel in a circular path which may be closed on the side remote from the member 6 by a guide 23. The cam for actuating the shaft 13 is shaped according to the number of repeat impressions desired. The member 6 may be moved positively in both directions, or positively in one direction and by a spring in the other direction. In modifications, the member 6 is actuated electromagnetically or by fluid pressure, and in the construction of Fig. 9, it is moved into its non-changing position by a pin 48 on the numbering box and returned by a spring 44 when permitted by the de-energization of a magnet 46. The circuit of this magnet is controlled by a switch actuated at intervals, in accordance with the number of repeats desired, by a cam. When energized it holds the member 6 against return movement by the spring 44. The invention may be applied to machines having reciprocating numbering heads.
