Abstract

522,033. High-molecular ketenes. DEUTSCHE HYDRIERWERKE AKT.-GES. Dec. 2, 1938, No. 35210. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] High molecular ketenes are prepared by treating halides of aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monobasic carboxylic acids having at least six carbon atoms in the molecule with strong tertiary bases, at ordinary or raised temperatures and in the presence or' absence of a water-free indifferent solvent such as carbon disulphide or benzene. As starting materials there are specified the halides, especially the chlorides of caproic, lauric, palmitic, oleic, montanic and the naphthenic acids, and specified bases are the trialkylamines such as trimethylamine, triethylamine, tripropylamine, alkylated ethylenediamines and alkylpiperidines. The ketenes are acylating agents for organic compounds which contain an active hydrogen atom such as amines, hydroyl compounds and their substitution products, e.g. #-oxyethanesulphonic acid, #-methylaminoethane sulphonic acid. In examples triethylamine is gradually added to lauric acid chloride or palmitic acid chloride dissolved in carbon disulphide with the exclusion of atmospheric moisture, and left to stand for 24 hours; triethylamine hydrochloride is filtered off and the filtrate is evaporated to give decyl or tetradecyl ketene; decyl ketene forms potassium laurate on boiling with alcoholic caustic potash. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes, in addition, as starting materials the halides, especially the chlorides, of aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polybasic carboxylic acids, e.g. adipic acid, sebasic acid, cyclo-hexane-1, 2-diacetic acid, and of nuclear alkylated aryl fatty acids containing at least one aryl group. The hydrocarbon residues of the polybasic aliphatic or cycloaliphatic carboxylic acids as well as of the corresponding monobasic acids may also contain hetero-atoms, e.g. oxygen or sulphur, or groups containing hetero-atoms, e.g. hydroxyl, ester, mercaptan or sulphone groups. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
