Abstract
521,792. Storing and transporting liquefied gases. GEERTZ, E., and TAYLOR, J. E. Sept. 28, 1938, No. 28198. [Class 8 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] Liquid carbon dioxide is conveyed in an insulated travelling container having a relief valve or valves preventing undue rise of pressure and temperature, and delivered to a storage container in which the liquid is maintained cool by a refrigerant circuit. Gaseous carbon dioxide may be compressed in two stages with intermediate and final cooling in watercooled exchangers, and condensed by a refrigerant circuit for direct delivery to the travelling container. Alternately, the gas may be compressed and water-cooled in three stages, condensed by liquid and delivered to a stationary container in which refrigerating coils are immersed in the body of liquid, the travelling container being supplied from this stationary container. The travelling container may be fitted with transverse baffles open at top and bottom, and with a level indicator. The travelling container 47 supplies the stationary consumer's container 86 by making temporary connections by pipes 89, 90 between the two gas spaces and the two liquid spaces and either providing a liquid pump 87 or a compressor, the compressed gas being further heated to increase its pressure in the liquid in the travelling container. The consumer's container may have a relief valve or valves 99, and a liquid pump 100 may withdraw the liquid from the container to supply a receiver 104 and charging heads 105 for the filling of small cylinders &c. The liquid in it may be cooled by a refrigerating plant 93 which may comprise evaporator coils 91 either in the liquid or the gas space or may cool an external exchanger through which the liquid carbon dioxide may be circulated to and from the container. The liquid pump 100 may comprise a plunger 191, Fig. 16, working in a cylinder secured in place of the usual head of a water-cooled compressor, the plunger being fixed to the piston 185 which is driven by a crank 186.
