Abstract

521,657. Locking rods. JUNKERS FLUGZEUG-UND-MOTORENWERKE AKT.-GES. Nov. 24, 1938, No. 34184. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1937. [Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXIX, XXVI, and XXXIII] In a locking arrangement of the type wherein a working piston is locked in the cylinder in which it is displaced by a pressure medium, by means of one or more locking members subjected to the influence of an auxiliary power member, particularly applicable to variable length struts for retractable landing gear of aircraft, one or more resilient expansible rings are arranged and guided in grooves in the working piston and are adapted to be maintained in locking engagement with grooves in the cylinder by one or more auxiliary pistons. In the form shown, two resilient rings 6, 7 which normally expand outwardly, are accommodated in grooves 4, 5 in the piston 2 and expand into grooves 8, 9 in the cylinder 1. The rings 6, 7 are held in the grooves 8, 9 by pins 11 which are movable radially by piston members 9<1>, 9<11> each of which is displaceable axially by a spring 10. For moving the piston 2 to the opposite end of the cylinder 1, pressure medium is admitted through port 13 to chamber 16, and passes along channels 20 to a space 18, thereby forcing the piston member 9<11> in the direction 14. The rings 6, 7 and the grooves 8, 9 are all bevelled as at 21, 22 so that, owing to the wedge action of the oblique surfaces, the axially directed force of the pressure medium on the ring 6 compresses it to such a degree that it withdraws completely from the groove 8 and the piston 2 is displaced to the other end of the cylinder 1. The resilient rings 6, 7 act as packing rings when the piston 2 moves in the cylinder 1. Instead of oblique surfaces, bell-crank levers may be used for effecting radial displacement of the resilient rings. In a modification described and illustrated in the Specification, the resilient rings normally contract inwardly.
