[Class 94 (i)] A method of preparing a group of candies, or like articles, for wrapping into a single package includes the step of squeezing the group to within a predetermined maximum dimension before delivering the group to a wrapping mechanism. The invention may be applied to a machine for taking a number of small rectangular caramels, which have been independently wrapped in another machine, and wrapping the selected group in a sheet of transparent cellulosic material. The wrapped caramels 54 are conveyed to the sizing mechanism by a belt conveyer 44 which is driven intermittently by a Geneva gear. The caramels 54 are carried on edge, and they are prevented from falling forwards, as the conveyer stops and starts, by a number of small rollers 56 which press lightly on their upper ends. The conveyer brings the leading caramel into contact with a stop plate 91, and the desired number of caramels is then moved laterally by a feed plunger 73. The group of caramels thus moved comes to rest between a sizing plunger 58 and the stop plate 91... Next, the plunger 58 moves forwards and squeezes the caramels until the total width of the group is slightly less than the width of a pocket 32 of a wrapping wheel 33. Finally, the plunger 73 continues its forward movement and pushes the group of caramels into the pocket 32, a sheet 25 of wrapping material being carried into the pocket by the group. The wrapping is completed by mechanism of the kind described in Specifications 13382/09, [Class 94 (i)], and 449,531. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, describes apparatus for folding and sealing the sheet 25. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
