Abstract

521,315. Automatic control systems. JONES, L., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 15, 1938, No. 33233. [Class 38 (iv)] Arcs.-A relay coil 11 is connected in shunt to the electrodes of an arc by conductors 6, 7 and is adapted to control the speed of an electrode feeding motor 1 by short-circuiting a resistance 9 in its field circuit when the arc gap is short and short-circuiting a resistance 8 in the armature circuit when the arc is long. A relay 5 in shunt to the arc electrodes holds its contacts 5a, 5b closed to cause feeding until the voltage across the electrodes becomes very low or zero, as at starting, when the contacts 5c, 5d, 5e close to cause retraction with the resistance 8 short-circuited the field resistance 9 being in circuit. The relays may be fed through a rectifier network if required.
