Abstract

521,191. Signalling over power circuits; secret signalling. CARPENTER, R. E. H. Oct. 7, 1938, No. 29162. [Class 40 (iv)] In an arrangement for signalling over polyphase mains, signals from and to a circuit M1 are applied to and received from opposite points of the motor winding of a machine which is 'driven at synchronous speed by a separate motor or runs synchronously by reason of a connection to a D.C. source B1. A similar arrangement is provided at the distant station. A second signal channel is provided by a further pair of connections midway between the first pair. The analogous rotary condenser arrangements can be used instead of the machines shown. In a secret signalling system a similar arrangement is provided but since the transmission wires are not power wires the rotary coupling devices at the respective stations are driven synchronously by additional means. To ensure that the transmitter and receiver are properly in step phase adjusting means may be provided, e.g., by means for adjusting the value of the armature current from the D.C. source. Alternatively, both channels may be provided with a D.C. source, means being provided also for adjusting the relative strengths of the currents from these sources.
