521,165. Dyes. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. Nov. 10, 1938, No. 32683. Convention date, Nov. 10, 1937. [Class 2(iii)] Symmetrical carbocyanine (trimethine) dyes are made by condensing an N:N<SP>1</SP>-dialkylbenzimidazolium salt which contains a reactive methyl group in α-position to the nitrogen and may, if desired, contain substituents in the benzene nucleus, with a trihalogenmethane, i.e. chloroform, bromoform or iodoform, in the presence of an alkali alcoholate. Substituents specified are alkyl, alkoxy, phenyl, phenylene. They may be used for the optical sensitization of photographic emulsions. In the examples, 1:3-diethyl - 2 - methyl - 5 - ethoxy-or 5 -methylbenzimidazolium iodide (2 mols) and iodoform (1 mol) are condensed in presence of methanol and sodium methylate and the dyestuff precipitated as perchlorate. Literature references for the preparation of the 2-methylbenzimidazoles and their conversion into salts are given.
