Abstract
521,018. Drilling-machines. HOLMAN BROS, Ltd., and RULE, J. Nov. 9, 1938, No. 32558. [Class 83 (iii)] A rotary rock drill, particularly one that employs a diamond core drill, has the spindle oscillated through an arc of about one revolution or less, and at the same time it is given an axial reciprocation or vibration to clear the drill. A fluid pressure motor 11 of the crescent shaped chamber type has its speed regulated by a throttle valve 11c centrifugally controlled at 13 through a rocker 13b. Drive is transmitted to the spindle from a balanced crank 15a through a rack and pinion 16 geared at 19 to the spindle which runs in ball bearings 20 and has a water supply to the drill at 19b. A cam on the end of the spindle, which is splined at 19c to the driving sleeve, engages a roller 24 screw-adjusted at 24b for the axial motion. The handles are in the form of bell cranks, the shorter arms 25b being held against an interposed cushioning washer by springs. This reduces the vibration caused by the longitudinal reciprocation.
