DRILLING MACHINE.
Application led December My invention relates to machines having tools rotated by means of a reduction gearing and particularly but not exclusively to those for drilling a rock and employing a motor for rotating the tool and in this respect comprehends drilling machines in which the tool performs its work by rotative action alone or in addition has imparted thereto percussive action.
My invention will be best understood from the accompanying drawings when read in light of the following` specification of one specific embodiment of my invention submitted for illustrative purposes while its scope will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section through the front end of a hammer rock drill provided with an independent motor for rotating the drill;
Figs. 2, 3 and 1 respectively are sections on the lines 2 2, 3-3 and 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings I have shown the front end of a hammer drill, the cylinder 1 having a reduced diameter portion 2 shown integrally formed therewith. Mount- 'ed for reciprocation in the cylinder is a piton having a head portion 3 and a hammer bar portion 4l. Forwardly of the hammer bar is the chuck 5 which carries in non-rotatable relation thereto a drill bit G having the usual cutting end 410, the rearward end of the shank of the drill being adapted to be struck by the hammer bar portion of the piston at the forward end of the piston stroke. For rotating the chuck I provide a fluid operated motor comprising` the central rotor 7 and the side rotors 8, the central rotor surrounding the reduced diameter portion of the cylinder and as shown being aligned with the bit and mounted coaXially therewith.
Enclosing the rotors of the chuck rotating motor is a casing 9 provided with suitable bores 10 for vthe side rotors and a bore 11 for the central rotor. Foroperating the motor I provide the casing with motive fluid inlets 12. and exhaust ports 13, the latter opening through the casing and communieating with the atmosphere. Any suitable means may be provided for 'supplying motive fluid to the intake ports of the motor as 7, 1920. serial No. 428,958.

For supporting the side rotors I provide spindles l5, and for supporting the spindles I mount the opposite ends of the same in recesses respectively formed in the casing and the cylinder. The side rotors are recessed as indicated at 16 to receive the antifriction bearing rollers 17, which coact with the spindles to provide bearings for such rotors. The central rotor is secured by means of a rey 18 to a shaft in the form of a sleeve 19 having an interior bearing 20 on the reduced diameter portion of the cylinder.
Exteriorly of the motor casing I provide `a bearing member 21 and for operatively connecting it to the central rotor I show it as inte, 2;rally formeel with the sleeve 19. This bearing` is provided with a bore, the
' surface of which is in rotatable contact with the forward portion of the reduced diameter portion 2 of the cylinder and on the exterior portion thereof is provided a cylindrical bearing surface 22, the axis of which is inclined to the axis of the cylinder. Rotatively carried by the bearing member I provide a gear member 23 which has formed on "Jopposite sides thereof oppositely facing series of gear teeth 24 and 25. For holding` the gear member in position I provide a collar 26 sui'i-oiiiidingtlie end of the reduced diameter portion of the cylinder and having an end surface abutting the rearward face 27 Y of the chuck and on the opposite side thereof a surface 28 in contact with the side of the gear 23. As illustrated this collar is provided with a reduced diameter portion 29 affording a cylindrical surface 30 inclined to the axis of the machine, which surface conforms to the interior surface of a similar recess formed in the end of the bearing inember 21. It will be noted by this construction that after the collar has been placed in the recess of the bearing memberv and the two have been placed over the reduced diameter portion of the cylinder that the collar is securely locked to the bearing` member.
Carried by the machine is a fixed series of gear teeth 34 which I have shown formed on the frontend of the motor casing and meshing with the series of gear teeth 24, while carried by the chuck is another series of gear teeth 35 adapted to mesh with the series of gear teeth 25. When the bearing member 21 is rotated by the motor, the gear is moved to cause the series of gear teeth 24 to roll around the series of gear teeth 34 and the series of gear teeth 25 to roll. around the series of gear teeth 3V. If the gear set 2l -34 is of different ratio than the gear set 25-35, the chuck will be rotated at a speed proportional to this difference in ratio, for example, if the difference in ratio is that corresponding to the difference of one tooth then for one revolution of the central rotor of the motor, the clinch Will be advanced a distance corresponding to the pitch of one tooth.

Ahhough l have described a specific embodiment of my invention for illustrative purposes, it will be understood that l am not to be limited thereby to its particular proportions and arrangeinei'it of parts and that extensive deviations may be made therefrom Without departing from the spirit of my invention.

member interposed between said geared member and chuck and in driving relation with the former, said bearing member having a bearing surface thereon inclined to the aXis of said tool, a member rotatively supported by said bearing and having two series of gear teeth', a stationary series of gear teeth carried by Vsaid machine meshing with one of the first named series and affording a gear set of one ratio, a-series of gear teeth in driving relation to said chuck meshing with the other of the first named `series and affording a gear set of different ratio, the gear teeth of said last named gear set being disposed generally radially to the aXis of said chuck, and a substantially radially disposed thrust bearing for said chuck.

In a drilling machine, a hammer piston, a chuck, a tool carried by said chuck, a motor having a hollow rotor aligned with said too-l and a siderotor cooperating with the first mentioned rotor, a bearing member surrounded by said rotor and havinfg a bearing surface inclined to 'the axis of said rotor,'said bearing surface rotatably supporting a gear structure, means for transmitting the force of said hammer piston through said rotor and bearing member, said gear structure having two series of gear teeth, a stationary series of gear teeth carried by said machine meshing with one of the first named series and affording a gear set of one ratio, a series of gear teeth in driving relation to said chuck meshing with the other of the first nam-ed series and affording agear set of different ratio, the gear teeth kof said last named gear set being disposed generally radially to the aXis of said chuck, and a. substantially radially disposed thrust beariifg for said chuck.

In a percussive drilling machine, a chuck, a drill bit carried thereby, a reciprocatory hammer piston, a motor for rotating said chuck, a stationary series of gear teeth carried by said machine, a second series of gear teeth in driving relation to said chuck, a vvabbling gear having two series of gear teeth and affording a driving connection between the two first mentioned series, the

17. ln a rock drill, a casing containing a hammer piston, a chuck and a motor all coaXially arranged, a drill steel carried by said chuck, facing annular series ot gear teeth on said chuck and casing, the gear teeth ot each series of gear teeth being disposed generally radially to the aXis o'f said chuck, means providing a thrust bearing tor said chuck, a gear driven by said motor meshing with both series of gear teeth, and a hearing for said gear through which the impact ot said piston is communicated to said drill steel.

In a rook drill, a casing comprising a cylinder having a forwardly projecting tubular extension, a motor and a gear driven by the motor both mounted on said tubular extension, a chuck located forwardly ot said extension, generally radially disposed facing gear teeth on said chuck and easing, said gear having two sets of generally radially dis )osed gear teeth respectively meshing wit the gear teeth on said chuck and ing, means providing a thrust hearing tor said chuck, and a piston in said cylinder for imparting impact to said drill steel through said tubular extension.

In a rock drill, a cylinder, a hammer piston, a chuck, a drill steel carried by said chuck, a motor for rotating said chuck, a wabbling gear for connecting said motor and chuck, a bearing member for said gear, a collar on said bearing member for retaining,` said Wabbling gear, a tubular member through which the force of said piston is transmitted tosaid drill steel, said bearing member and collar being mounted :tor rotation on said tubular member, and a sleevejoint-connection between said collar and bearing member inclined to the axis oi rotation sufliciently to retain said collar on said bearing` member.
