Abstract

520,644. Making lined tubes. EDWARDS, E. M., and WEJSER, R. F. Oct. 26, 1938, No. 30990. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Jointing by stamping.-Tubes of gas condensers and like heat interchangers are lined with corrosion resisting metal such as lead, by first inserting a tubular liner in the tube, then applying end closures larger than the inside of the tube and connected together by a tension member passing through the lining, and finally admitting fluid pressure to force the lining into contact with the tube. In lining a tube 10 in situ in tube plates 11, 12, the liner 13 is inserted and the ends are first expanded against the ends of the tube 10 by conical plugs 17, 18 operated by a screw-threaded tube 14. A fluid tight joint is provided at the end 17 and down the other end is secured a hinged conical ring clamp 19 provided with holes 21 for escape of air between the liner and tube 10 when the liner is expanded. Expansion of the liner may be effected by hydraulic pressure supplied from a pump through the tube 14 which is perforated at 15. The screw threads at opposite ends of the tube 14 are of different or opposite pitch. In a modification, the tube 14 may be replaced by a rod screwed at one end only the other end carrying the plug 18 which has longitudinal and lateral apertures for the fluid. After removal of the plugs the ends of the liner may be beaten over the ends of the tube 10, and the adjacent surface of the tube plates. A hole may be drilled near the end of the tube 10 to allow escape of air, instead of using the ring 19.
