Abstract
520,481. Electrostatic separators. BIBBY & SONS, Ltd., J., STURTEVANT ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and IBISON, A. Oct. 15, 1938, No. 29909. [Class 72] In the removal, of suspended matter from liquids by electrostatic separation, the suspended matter deposited on a collecting electrode under the influence of a separate discharge electrode is continuously removed mechanically from the zone of treatment. The liquid to be treated is fed by a pipe 7 to the space between a discharge electrode 2 and a rotating cylinder 1 forming a collecting electrode, the electrodes being located in a tank 3. The liquid is caused to flow in a circuitous path by baffles 8, 9 having apertures 10, 11 respectively, and the purified liquid leaves by a pipe 7a. The solid material adhering to the electrode is removed by fixed scrapers 12. In a modification, Fig. 3, the collecting electrode 14 is in the form of a wheel with a channel section 14a, Fig. 4, arranged in a stationary casing 16 and the discharge electrode 18 is a flat strip bent to semi - circular or arcuate form mounted on the surface 17 of the casing 16. The suspended matter in the wheel 14 is removed by scrapers 19 arranged at one or more points above the casing 16. A steam coil 19a for raising the temperature of the liquid may be located within the casing 16. The liquid is fed into a tank 20 by an opening 21 and from there by a conduit through a port in the surface 17 into the casing 16 from which it is removed by a pipe 24. A solvent for the liquid under treatment may be applied through the inlet 21 while the liquid under treatment may be supplied at a point intermediate between the tank 20 and the outlet 24. The channel 14a may be provided with concentric corrugations and the discharge electrode with a number of ridges extending into the channels formed by the corrugations. In a further modification, the collecting electrode is stationary and is in the form of a hollow inclined tube, a scraper in the form of a continuously rotating worm of insulating material being disposed inside the tube. The discharge electrode is in the form of a group of wires wound round the core of the scraper, anda liquid inlet is arranged intermediate the ends of the cylinder. The wire may be dispensed with, the scraper being made of metal and acting on the electrode and the cylinder being provided with an insulating lining.
