Abstract
519,929. Bowling alleys. TRIGGS, W. (Bowling Patents Management Corporation). July 9, 1938, No. 20412. [Class 132 (ii)] Apparatus for setting bowling pins on an alley includes a pin setting support provided with means for receiving and holding the pins 'in proper playing position, said means being adapted to release the pins when the setting support is moved into a pin setting position, so that the pins are placed in proper playing positions on the bed of the alley when the support is moved away and is characterised in that the movable setting, support is provided with suction holding means arranged to engage portions of the bowling pins and to hold said pins in proper playing , arrangement on the support due to suction produced in said holding means. A support 45, shown in its component parts in Fig. 15, comprising a rectangular frame 46 and two triangular frames 59<1> and 50, all formed of pipes, the interiors' of which are interconnected. and connected by passages in the bearing members to a pipe 103 and a suction motor 105, is mounted on shafts 84 rotatable in bearings 87, attached to members 89 with guide rollers 90 for engaging U-shaped guides 26; Figs. 1 and 18, for vertical displacement by cords 91 and motors 22. The shafts 84 carry radial arms 101 with rollers 102 for engaging the inside grooves of the guides 26. which have extra arms 30; 31, 33, Fig. 5, with spring gates 42, 35, 39 and two-way gate 44. The pins are placed in wire frames 71 arranged on the triangular frame 50. Each pin depresses a spring tensioned needle valve 70, Fig. 10. in a rubber cup 66 to connect the cup with the suction motor 105, and so to hold the pin firmly. Lowering of the support 45 then causes the roller 102 to traverse the arms 30 and 31 and the extended groove 26 thus turning the shafts 84 and the support 45 through 180 degrees to set the pins on spots 21 on the bed of the alley. The suction is released by a tap 106 on the motor 105 and the pins are released while the support rises, the roller traversing the arms 31 and 33 to right the support 45.' Afer some of the pins have been knocked, down, the support descends, the roller 102 remaining in the groove 26 so that the frame 59<1> with large groups 74 of suction caps similar to 66, but smaller, picks up the standing pins, lifts them while the bed is rocked and then deposits them on the identical spots on which they stood. This process may be repeated. after which the support 45 rises, the roller passing through the gate 42. to close the straight groove. The pressure may be released automatically as the pins touch' the bed of the alley by a valve lever on the support engaging a pin on the guide 26. A device for returning the ball consists of an arm 120 with a suction cap 121 'controlled by levers 126, 125<1> and a runway 24.
