Abstract
519,604. Drawing. WILLIAMS, W. P. (American Rolling Mill Co.). Jan. 9, 1939, No. 737. [Class 83 (iv)] Sheet metal is reduced in gauge by being drawn under tension between die elements forming a long, narrow constricted throat, the die elements being carried by substantial rigid beams for resisting the outward force exerted by the metal being drawn and any deflection of the beams being compensated by controlling the expansion and contraction of portions of the beam. Upper and lower dies 20, 20<1> are keyed and bolted to beams 5, 5<1> mounted in slots formed in spaced housings 1 upstanding from a base 2, Figs. 3 and 4, bridged at the top by a member 4. The upper beam is clamped down by means of a rocker .block 6 and wedge 7 which are moved by screws 21 driven by a motor 22 through gearing 23, 24. The beam may be raised by hydraulic means, 8 and 9, Fig. 3. The dies are provided with die faces 10 and 10<1> and are drilled as at 30 for the supply of lubricant to the work. Two tight coilers 25, 26 driven by motors through gearing and clutch means 26c draw the strip 27 through the die opening. Any deflection of the beam which may occur is corrected for by controlling the temperature of that part of each beam adjacent the dies. To this end the beams are provided with passage 13 for cooling fluid and with a high frequency induction heating winding 11. Alternatively resistance heating elements may be inserted in the beam. The tension may be maintained constant by the means described in Specification 467,708.
