519,579. Photo-electric apparatus for measuring surface reflection. BRITISH SANGAMO CO., Ltd. (Weston Electrical Instrument Corporation). Aug. 23, 1938, No. 24797. [Class 40 (iii)] Apparatus for measuring the reflection factor of a surface comprises an electrical instrument 6, Fig. 6, arranged in conjunction with photoelectric cells C, C<1>, which may be mounted back to back, to indicate both the " illumination " and " brightness " of a surface. To read the former, light from widely divergent angles may fall on a cell, but for the latter a removable baffle B, which may be of cellular form, is placed over a cell to obtain light only at substantially normal incidence. Different ranges may be selected by means of the ammeter-shunting switch 13 and either cell may be connected in by switch 26. In a modification, Fig. 7, which gives a direct indication of the reflection factor, the indicator may be a ratio meter of the crossed-coil type 28, 29. The photo-sensitive elements C may be carried by an exploring unit 18, Fig. 4, separate from the measuring instrument. In another modification, one cell only is used, the baffle B being in position for brightness measurements only.
