Abstract
519,298. Metals. WALKER, C. BELL-. Aug. 19, 1938, No. 24447. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Groups IV, V and XXXV] Moulding composition comprises a binder and a metallic filler in the form of small thin discrete laminae. The filler may be obtained by cutting or punching metal foil, by rolling the swarf or waste obtained when machining metals or by forming a bunch of wires, which may be crimped or bent, cutting off short lengths and rolling; suitable metals include brass, copper, iron, aluminium. The metal fillers may be etched, chemically treated, plated or metal plated. Suitable binders include synthetic resins such as phenol-aldehyde resins, alkyd resins and urea-aldehyde resins, natural resins such as shellac and low-melting point metals such as tin, bearing metals and cadmium. In an example a moulding composition is prepared from a phenol-formaldehyde novolak, hexamethylentetramine, aluminium flakes and lubricants, plasticizers and pigments : composite articles may be prepared by using various moulding powders in one moulding. For example, in the manufacture of small electric motor parts having magnetic properties, parts having mechanical strength, parts having insulating properties and parts having antifrictional properties may all be moulded in one moulding by inserting various moulding powders in order into one mould.
