Abstract

518,873. Airscrews. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd., and THOMAS, F. M. Sept. 1, 1938, No. 25641. [Class 114] An airscrew spinner has radially extending elements on the external surface to increase the airflow over the spinner for engine cooling &c., the elements taking the form of streamlined projections for fairing the blade shanks, or impeller vanes encircled by a tubular ring. The spinner 1 has openings 3 at the rear end for cleaning the blades when mounting on the airscrew. The fairing elements comprise a rigid pressing 4 of streamlined contour which is reinforced by an internal part 5, and attached immediately in front of the blade by flange 4A to the spinner 1 which is stiffened in this area by a reinforcing plate 6. Yieldable margin elements 8 are secured at the joints of parts 4 and 5, and bear lightly against the shank 2A of the blade 2 to allow for pitch variation. In a modification, impeller vanes are secured to the spinner 10 by flanges and rivets, and comprises sheet metal walls 11 jointed together at their leading and trailing edges 12, 13 and having intermediate spacers 15 secured by rivets 14. A tubular ring comprising a forward part 18 and an overlapping rear part 19 is attached to the outer flange of the vanes, and is assembled around the. blade shanks.
