Abstract

518,816. Throat microphones. BALLANTINE, S. June 3, 1938, No. 16698. [Class 40(iv)] A throat microphone utilizes the piezoelectric effect, two microphones being preferably carried by a band adapted to be worn round the neck. The wall 1 enclosing the two microphones is of glove leather &c., and may be covered with thin rubber or leather 4 passing over buttons 5 which convey the throat vibrations to the crystal units 7. The units 7 are mounted between members 8, 9 of rubber, leather, or synthetic resin. The buttons 5 of balsa wood or white pine are cemented to the crystal and are secured to metal stirrups 10 which embrace the crystal unit. Metallic inserts 16 pass through the wall 1 and serve to earth the wearer. The frequency characteristic of the microphone at the higher frequencies is improved by making the casing 11 robust, and dimensioning and clamping the crystals so that they have a high natural frequency. Damping of the crystals may be effected by the members 8, 9 or by inserting pieces of damping material, such as oiled felt or rubber, between the crystal and its housing, Fig. 13 (not shown). A stop 7<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 6, prevents excessive bending of the crystal. Connections to the crystal unit are made through a cable having a central conductor and concentric sheath. Specifications 518,814 and 518,815 are referred to.
