Abstract

518,702. Tufting-machines. BORENSTEIN, E., and DUCKSTEIN, I. Nov. 30, 1938, No. 34859. Convention date, Dec. 1, 1937. [Class 112] In a tufting-machine having alooper, formed with a cutting edge, and a cutting blade pivoted thereto these members are operated by one mechanism so arranged that with a single rocking movement in one direction the looper will move forward to receive the loop and with a single rocking movement in the other direction the looper will be retracted and the blade will simultaneously oscillate across the cutting edge of the looper. The pivot of the blade is so arranged that the tendency is for the thread to roll into the angle of the blades during cutting. A rotary needle guide is provided. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, the looper 27' is adjustably carried on an arm 27 pivoted at 25, and the blade 29 is adjustably carried on a member 31 pivoted at 28 to an extension of the arm 27. An eccentric 23 on the driving shaft 17 oscillates a rockshaft 20 having arms 24, 31' linked to extensions of the members 27, 31 respectively. The cutting edges of the looper and blade are straight, and are always partly in contact, and the pivot 28 is provided with a spring to press the blade against the looper and has slight play to allow deflection instead of bending of the blade if a hard portion of thread'is encountered. In a simplified form of mechanism, Fig. 11, the eccentric 23 drives an arm 51 on the shaft 25 directly, and a link 63 connected to the eccentric rod oscillates an arm 61 on a rock-shaft 59 carrying a crankpin 56 by which the cutter member 31 is actuated. Needle guides.-The shaft 17 carries a member 57, Figs. 11 and 22, which makes contact with the needle on each stroke to prevent it from being struck by the looper, the member 57 having a bevelled leading edge and a trailing edge so shaped that the needle is engaged always below its eye during its descent.
