Abstract
518,696. Seaming. GRABHER, H. Sept. 3, 1938, No. 25819. [Class 83 (iv)] In a device for closing tins and like metaL containers of the kind in which the tin is clamped between upper and lower clamping plates and rotated relatively to the seaming roller or rollers which engage the edge of the tin and closure, the lower clamping plate is vertically adjustable on the frame of the device and the operating means for the device, including an operating member for the clamping means, are mounted at the head of the device. The tin to be closed is placed on a rotary clamping plate 41 which may be raised by means of a screw 38 and handle 39 until the tin is firmly held between this plate and an upper clamping plate 4 which supports the lid- or closure of the tin. On turning a crank handle 6, the tin is rotated and at the same time rollers 23, 24 are moved in towards the tin to form the double fold closing seam 46. The rollers 23, 24 are mounted at the ends of'levers 19 and 20 pivoted at 21 and 22 and movable against the action of springs 30 by means of members 26, 28 which bear on the surfaces of cam discs 12, 13 carried on the shaft of a ratchet wheel 14 operated by a pawl 11 mounted on an eccentric 9 on the axle 'of the handle 6. Shearing.-An opened tin may be prepared for re-sealing by mounting it base upwards between the plates 4 and 41, the opened edge being cut and flanged by rollers 34, 35.
