Abstract
518,618. Gas storage cylinders. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd., and STEPHENSON, A. Aug. 25, 1938, No. 24999. [Class 8 (ii)] A container for storing fluids, e.g. compressed or liquefied gases, under pressure is formed with a cylindrical body strengthened to a progressively decreasing extent towards the ends. Fig. 3 shows the body with a middle portion of uniform thickness and portions 3 conically tapering towards the ends. These portions may alternatively be stepped or curved either on the outside or inside of the vessel. Fig. 8 shows a vessel with a globular corrugation 2b in the middle tapering portions 3b, 4b and one globular end 6b. Strengthening may also be effected by a single tapered sheath or a stepped sheath, or by longitudinally separated sheathing rings of progressively diminishing breadth or thickness. The sheaths may be formed of wire bundles. Strengthening may also be effected by corrugating the cylinder, formed of uniform thickness, to varying depths and pitches either transversely or obliquely. The cylinder may be in two or three longitudinal parts, bolted together. The ends may be at least in part of a thickness less than that of the body portion as described in Specification 518,661.
