Abstract
518,317. Electron microscopes. FIDES GES. FUR DIE VERWALTUNG UND VERWERTUNG VON GEWERBLICHEN SCHUTZRECHTEN. Aug. 22, 1938, No. 24688. Convention date, Aug. 24, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] An object is introduced into the evacuated space of an electron microscope by means of a valve plug 3 having a transverse aperture ; the object is contained in a cartridge 6 which is introduced into the aperture, brought into the operating position by rotation of the plug and finally displaced longitudinally against a yielding control, tending to maintain the cartridge within the plug aperture, such as spring 9, by means of a plunger 13 which is movable toward and away from the objective lens 2, until the object is in the required position for operation. The cartridge comprises object carrier rings 7, 8, main body with evacuating holes 20, and a retaining ring 22 having a set-screw 11 sliding in a groove 12 to prevent rotation and pressed upwardly by spring 9. The plunger 13 has a rack actuated by a pinion 16 on a suitably packed shaft 17. The object is introduced through a side aperture and the plug is first turned until tube 19 opens into a small side tube which evacuates it roughly before being turned to the operating position. Cooling channels 21 are provided. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes moving the cartridge by means other than a plunger, and not necessarily against a yielding control. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
