Abstract
518,146. Making lock-washers. EVERY. C. E. (Illinois Tool Works). Sept. 16, 1938, No. 27103. [Class 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Lock washers with radial twisted prongs have thickened portions in their body forming work spacing abutments to prevent complete flattening of the prongs, In one form, Fig. 2, the thickened portions 20 occur at intervals around the washer body, such washers being punched from metal sheets having thickened ribs 32, Fig. 7, rolled on the surfaces. The central hole 34 is first punched, then the teeth spaces 36, the teeth are next twisted and finally the washer is separated from the sheet. In a modified form the washer is provided with a complete annular thickened body 42, Fig. 17. This is formed by advancing a metal strip 74, Figs. 22 and 23, step by step through a series of punches. A punch 46 first punches the central hole 76. The edge of this is then turned up by the conical punch 48, this upstanding edge being upset into a thickened portion of rectangular section by the punch 50. Three subsequent punches 52, 54 and 56 cut the teeth spaces, twist the teeth and separate the completed washer respectively,
