Abstract

517,811. Stairs. GUERCI, G. May 24, 1938, No. 15516. [Class 20 (iv)] The steps 10 of a staircase consist of tubes laid side by side across the ascent of the staircase with their walls close together and the upper portions of the walls constituting or bearing the treads of the stairs. The tubes, which as shown in Fig. 3 are of trapzoidal in cross-section, comprise the forwardly and upwardly inclined riser wall 12 and the rear wall 14, the latter being shaped to fit against the lower part of the riser wall. The under walls 13 of the tubes are arranged to lie in approximately the same plane and adjacent tubes are connected together by bolts 17 passing through holes in the walls of the tubes. The tubes may be of asbestos-cement and reinforced by embedded wire-netting or metal rods or wires, and the upper wall 11 and riser wall 12 of each tube bear a tread 15 and riser 16, respectively, of wearing or decorative material such as rubber, artificial marble, metal or wood. If desired, each tube may be formed with a vertical riser wall which merges through a nosing into the horizontal tread wall; alternatively, each tube may be formed of triangular cross-section. The steps may be built separately into a supporting wall so that each step acts as a cantilever, or by securing the steps at one or both ends to a girder. End plates, lugs or internal flanges may be provided at the ends of the steps for the attachment' of banister posts. When formed of asbestoscement, the steps may be formed by coating a cylindrical, felt-covered mandrel with one or more layers of asbestos-cement, and stripping the tube so formed from the mandrel after partial setting of the asbestos-cement, and then deforming the tube to the desired cross-section. Alternatively, the mandrel may be shaped to give the tube the desired cross-section. The steps may also be formed from metal, wood, or synthetic resin and may be sprayed with a metallizing substance.
