Abstract

A number of props (4) are used which extend from a step to the next flight of the staircase and enough props have to be used so that the whole staircase is supported without bending. A line (3) is marked out for the lift shaft. There is a line (5) slightly outside and within this time the steps, risers, plaster, shaft, and handrail are cut away. The shaft is then bricked up, replastered or dressed using gusset plates (9), a new handrail (10) is provided, and strengthening is given to the stair supports using concrete covered iron runners.
