Abstract
517,535. Hair - straightening appliances. WHEATLEY, E. July 26, 1938, No. 22202. [Class 131] A method for straightening wavy hair consists in softening the hair passing it through[ means adapted to roll and, comb the hair and applying a restorative to the hair in its straightened condition. The rolling device consists of two clamp' members 1, 2 hinged at 3 each carrying a roller 4, 5 bearing intermeshing gear wheels 4a 5a engaging with -a pinion 6 driven by a crank 7. The upper roller 4 is carried in spring mounted bearings 8 which may be adjusted by nuts 10. The bearing blocks of the roller 5 are located in channels 15 in the side bars 2a of the base plate 2. The side bars 2a are-bridged by a plate 2b bearing a thin metal plate 19 carrying a plurality of staggered pins 20 forming a comb. A trough 21 collects moisture rolled from the hair. The two clamp members are locked together by a catch 22. The tress after moistening with an alkaline softening solution is placed between the rollers and spread over the comb-plate. The clamp is closed and the crank rotated thus drawing the hair through the device. After rolling, the hair is treated with a restorative having witch hazel and acetic acid as its main constituents.
