[Class 83 (iv)] [See also Group II] In apparatus for the simultaneous hardening and straightening of railway and tramway rails in which the rails are passed, head downwards, longitudinally through a hardening bath between two rows of superposed rollers, the rollers of the upper row are pressed downwards against the flanges of the rails by springs, the tension of which is adjustable in order to bend the rails in the reverse direction to the bending produced by the hardening. The rails 9 are passed head downward between upper rollers 17, Fig. 8, and lower rollers 8, mounted in a trough 1, containing hardening liquid, the rail being cleansed by rotary brushes 26, actuated from the shaft 23. The rollers 17, Fig. 8 are mounted on a shaft 23 which is rotated by pinions 24 and is mounted in bearings 16 which are connected by a cap 18 and are pressed downwardly by springs 19 which bear, through nuts 20, on threaded rods 21 screwed into the bottom parts of uprights 15, the pressure of the springs being adjustable by nuts 22. The rollers 8 are supported on shafts carried by bearings 7 and other rollers 11, 12 Fig. 6 may also be provided. When treating tramway rails, the roller 12, Fig. 6 may be slidably mounted in bushes 13 on a bearing 10 and may be pushed towards the rail by springs 14. When treating this form of rail, a narrow trough 27 may be arranged in the vat 1 and may be divided into two compartments one containing a hardening liquid fed in by a pipe 29 and the other being empty so that the thin part of the rail is hardened as well as the thick part. To prevent the liquid in the trough 27 coming into contact with the part of the rail outside it, a lining of fine wire gauze is mounted on the edge of the trough and contacts with the groove of the rail. Instead of wire gauze, any other material which is supple incombustible and does not decompose in water may be used. In a modification the rollers 17 are loosely mounted and the rollers 8 rotated, and the rollers 11 resiliently mounted instead of the rollers 12.
