Abstract

517,327. Lathes ; chucks. BIRKIGT, M. July 20, 1938. No. 21560. Convention date, April 28.. [Class 83 (iii)] Multi - work spindle auto - meter turret lathe particularly for shell-turning has a workmagazine which is moved into a feeding position, so that a new workpiece may be fed into a chuck from which a finished piece has been ejected, and is then moved to an operative position to allow a tool carrying member to be moved up for a working- operation. The blanks 1, Fig. 10 are carried in the inclined magazine 6 which is hinged at 65, Fig. 5 and moved by cam and linkage mechanism into a position where the lowermost blank is in alignment with one of the six chucks which occupies 'the loading station and from which a finished blank has just been ejected. A plunger 67 carried by the magazine and operated by compressed air supplied through a cam-controlled cock, pushes the work piece into the chuck 5, Fig. 7, where it is gripped by toggle operated lever jaws 43 under the control of a spring 46. The chuck is previously opened up for the ejection of a finished workpiece by a member 48 engaging a spring sleeve 47 on the chuck occupying the loading &c. position; the member 48 being attached to an axial rod 50 operated by a spring returned air operated piston 51. The chuck ceases to rotate in this position through the operation of clutch-means 60 from a rod 62 the latter member engaging a fixed stop 57, Fig. 1 on the machine through which compressed air is also admitted to pass along the central hollow passage of the chuck to eject a finished workpiece. The work-drum is indexed through a cam and link operated ratchet finger and the tools are carried in a non-rotatable holder 3, Fig. 1, sliding along a central hollow cylindrical guide member 33 under the control of a cam drum 35 on the main camshaft 11. One of 'the tools 4<1>, Fig. 8, on the carrier 3 is adapted to cut a recess in the shell and is automatically given a radial feed movement, when a' part 79 contacts the end of the shell, through rotational movement of the toolholder by cam means 82. A supply of cutting and lubricating oil for the various parts of the machine is under the control of a cam which opens a valve on each forward stroke of the tool-carrier 3.
