Abstract

517,174. Chlorine; alkali nitrates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 20, 1938, Nos. 21606 and 28578. Convention dates, July 21, 1937 and Oct. 30, 1937. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 1 (iii) and 90] A cyclic process for making alkali metal nitrate and chlorine comprises reacting nitric acid with an alkali chloride, removing nitrogen peroxide from the gaseous decomposition products by treating them with alkali chloride to be reacted subsequently with nitric acid, isolating chlorine from these gases, decomposing the residual notrosyl chloride to produce nitric oxide which is then converted to nitric acid and together with fresh acid, is used for the conversion of, further quantities of alkali chloride. According to one method described, the nitrosyl chloride from the distillation columns in which chlorine is removed is treated with water, forming aquaregia and evolving nitric oxide which is oxidised to the peroxide and hydrated to nitric acid ; the mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids is fed back to the first stage to react with sodium chloride, and part of the alkali nitrate formed is also fed back to decompose the hydrochloric acid returned. Preferably, however, the nitrosyl chloride is treated with alkali metal nitrate at temperatures preferably above 300‹C., e.g., in a rotating furnace. All the nitrogen is evolved as peroxide and is converted to nitric, acid and used for treatment of more alkali chloride ; also the amount of water to be evaporated in the process is reduced by about 50 per cent. In the first stage of the process, the nitric acid is treated with excess of alkali chloride, to give a liquor saturated with chloride. This is cooled and the alkali metal nitrate crystallises and is separated. The mother liquor is neutralised with sodium carbonate, evaporated to crystallise alkali chloride (which is returned to the cycle) and the mother liquor cooled to give more alkali nitrate. The final liquor being added to the liquor to be evaporated. Detailed examples and flow sheets are given.
