[Class 78 (i)] In a moving stairway wherein each step has a tread provided with ribs extending in the general direction of movement of the stairway to mesh with teeth on a combplate at the end of the stairway, the spaces between the tread ribs and those between the comb teeth are not greater than 5/16 of an inch so that a child's finger or an umbrella tip could not be caught. To ensure correct meshing of the tread ribs and teeth, guides 50, Fig. 2, with inclines at the front, rear and base are secured to the framework 44 and act on the ends 51, 52 of the treads. The ends of the tread ribs are vertical to avoid a V-gap between them, and may be integral with tread plates made of zinc die castings detachably secured, with an intervening layer 29, Fig. 6, of sound deadening material by screws 32 to strips 37 welded to the step frame. The screw heads 35 may be bridged by inserts 33 with ribs aligning with the tread ribs. The combplate is constructed with a tread 48 secured to a part 43 to which stainless steet rose sections 31 are secured, the teeth 30 thereon being machined.
