Abstract

516,375. Vapour-operated pumping devices. CRACKNELL, R. J., and U.D. ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. June 23, 1938. No. 18709. [Class 102 (ii)] [Also in Group XIII] A vapour-operated pumping device for recirculating unevaporated refrigerant from a separator vessel at the outlet side of a refrigerating evaporator back to the inlet of the evaporator comprises a chamber 22 having liquid inlet and outlet valves 47, 57 and a float 41 actuating inlet and outlet pressure-vapour valves 33, 37. The float is guided upon a tube 39 carrying at. its upper end the outlet valve 37, which has a finned extension 36 slidable in the exhaust port 25, the tube being slidable on a vertical pin 40 at its lower end. As liquid flows by gravity into the pump chamber the float rises and contacts with a flange 42 on the tube to raise it and to cause the exhaust valve to be forced to its seat by the vapour pressure, and simultaneously a lever 44 is rocked to open the vapour supply valve 33 to effect discharge of the liquid. When the chamber is empty the float engages a flange 43 at the lower end of the tube 39 to depress the tube and open the valve 37, and allow the valve 33 to close. The float is vented by a pipe 70. Rapid action of the float on the valves may be ensured by a rolling ball weight 77, Fig. 4, in a pivoted tube 76 which offers temporary resistance to the rise of the float and then allows it to rise quickly. In a modification magnetic or like valves may be arranged in the vapour conduits and be controlled by a float-actuated rocking switch inside the pump chamber.
