Abstract

515,763. Rubber dispersions. DEWEY & ALMY, Ltd. (Dewey & Almy Chemical Co.). June 11, 1938, Nos. 17430/38 and 13131/39. [Class 1 (i)] Rubber is dispersed in a polar organic liquid which is not a solvent but may be a swelling agent for rubber. Examples are ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, and the monophenyl ether of diethylene glycol. A colloidal material which swells or dissolves in the dispersion medium may previously be masticated with the rubber. Suitable materials are cellulose esters, prolamines, gums such as Loba gum, polymerized vinyl acetate and acetal resins. Dispersing agents, e.g. soaps or sulphonated alcohols may also be added. The viscosity of the dispersions may be increased by further additions of cellulose esters or by adding rubber solvents to the dispersion medium or to the dispersion itself. Inert fillers may be added to produce composition's' suitable for sealing containers.
