[Class 99 (ii)] [Also in Group IX] In a reel or holder for coils of wire, metal strip &c. comprising a number of coil-supporting bars slidably mounted in angularly - spaced slots extending out - wardly from the centre of a rotatable disc or its equivalent with means for simultaneously adjusting the bars along the slots to adjust the diameter of the reel and for locking the bars in such adjusted positions, the adjusting means include a member coaxial with the slotted disc or its equivalent and angularly movable in relation thereto and connected to the several coil-supporting bars by links whose plane of movement is substantially perpendicular to the axis of the reel. As shown each of the coil supporting bars 16 is formed integrally with one member of a two-part slide 15 having a rib 20 engaging one of a series of radial slots 13 in a disc 9 keyed to or formed integrally with a sleeve 6 freely rotatable on the spindle 5 of the reel. Each slide has a pivot 27 projecting from the side opposite to that carrying the bar 16 and the pivot is connected by a link 26 with a pivot 25 on the adjusting disc freely rotatable on the sleeve 6 and confined between a face of the disc 9 and a collar 24 on the sleeve. The disc 22 carries handles 31 by which it may be rotated to move the' links 26 and adjust the position of the bars 16 outwards from the spindle 5 to engage the internal periphery of a coil and the parts are locked in the adjusted position by one or more spring-pressed pawls 34 on the disc 9 engaging ratchet teeth on the disc 22 ; the pawls are disengaged from the ratchet teeth to enable the bars 14 to be moved inwards by rotating a ring 36 on the disc 9, the ring carrying one or more pins 38 projecting through holes in the disc 9 and engaging under the pawls The parts may be locked in the adjusted position by a friction plate or member which is adjusted longitudinally on the spindle 5 and engages the links 26 adjacent their connections to the adjusting disc 22. The reel may be mounted on a support 40 with its spindle 5 horizontal and slidable in the support and in which it may be locked by a set screw 41 ; the spindle may be mdunted upon the head of a screw adjustable in the support 40. The disc 9 may be replaced by a spider having slotted arms and the bars 16 may be curved. The links 26 are shaped in the form of a wideangled V having bowed limbs so that they nest together when the reel is reduced to its minimum diameter.
