Abstract

515,325. Hulling rice &c. BROWN, R. H., and MOULSDALE & CO., Ltd., W. E. June 16, 1938, No. 17937. [Class 58] Rice, and similar grains are shelled by passing between a hard toothed shelling roller and an endless band of resilient material running over rollers. The common plane in which the axes of the shelling roller and the main supporting roller of the band lie being inclined with respect to the band so that the grains pass below the shelling roller before the band reaches contact with the supporting roller. The rice is fed into a box 3 which delivers it on to a preferably longitudinally grooved feed plate 4 over which a coarsely corrugated roller 5 rotates to check the flow and to maintain a single layer of grains over the full width of the feed plate. The grains pass on to a slow running endless band 6 of resilient material passing over rollers 7, 8, the roller 8 being adjustably mounted. A fast running hard shelling roller 9, provided with teeth arranged parallel or slightly inclined to its axis is mounted above the belt so as to engage and hull. the grains thereon just before, the belt engages the supporting or anvil roller 7. The roller 9 may be vertically adjustable and also adjustable horizontally with reference to the anvil roller; this latter adjustment may be made while the machine is running. The small kernels are shot by the roller 9 against a deflecting plate 10 and apron 11 past an adjustable divider board 12 into a shoot 13 the lighter and rougher upper husks and also the lower husks resting on the band 6 falling into a shoot 14, A transverse air current is preferably directed across the falling material to a conduit 16 to ensure the separation of husks and kernels, the velocity of the current being made high if it is desired to carry away the husks in it. The grooves in the shelling roller are such that the grain lies wholly within the groove and that pressure is applied to the grain only from the floor of the groove.
