Abstract

514,446. Stapling. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and JACKSON, H. A. May 6, 1938, No. 13514. [Classes 17 (ii) and 89 (iii)] A shank stiffener 1 is secured to a shoe bottom S by staples 3, 4, each of which is driven with one leg passing through a hole provided in the stiffener and the other leg passing outside the edge of the stiffener. A stapling machine, for example of the kind described in Specification 17439/05, [Class 17], is modified for carrying out this operation by the provision of a three-sided gauge 13-15, Fig. 2, which receives the end of the stiffener when the shoe bottom is positioned beneath the stapling throat 5. The gauge is arranged unsymmetrically, as shown, with respect to the axis of the throat, and is secured to wings 7 on the throat, so that it may be changed for dealing with stiffeners of different forms. Specification 232,338, [Class 17 (ii)], also is referred to.
