[Class 138 (i)] Relates more particularly to the spraying devices of bottle-washing machines of the general construction set out in Specification 514,117, wherein the bottles are held solely by spring grippers 33, 34 engaging the beading on the necks of the bottles so that all of the bottle is exposed for spraying while being conveyed through the machine, said grippers being carried by frames 30 on an intermittently moving conveyer 19 which carries the bottles fed to the conveyer at A past a preliminary spraying device B, through a hot soaking tank C and then after draining at D past a number of cold water spraying devices E, F to an unloading station H. The preliminary spraying at B is effected by a supply pipe 75 having an orifice for each bottle of a row controlled by a sleeve valve operated by a lever 81 actuated by contact with the bottle itself and returned by a weight 83, so that if a bottle is lacking the jet opposite the empty position remains inoperative. After hot soaking at C, emptying at D and cooling by air entering below the stack 1043, the bottles are washed internally by twin jets delivered from a header 85 through inclined orifices 852 and over one row of these jets the bottles are washed externally by spray rings 87 carried by a pipe 88 mounted in vertical carriages 95 which are raised and lowered intermittently during the dwell of the conveyer by a pitman 98, lever 99 and cam 101. The bottles are rinsed at F by sprays 108, 109 and chlorinated at G.
