Abstract
513,976. Joint-making packing. TATE, F. R. (Martin Co., G. L.). Aug. 9, 1938, No. 23499. [Class 122 (iii)] [Also in Groups X, XVIII, XXII and XXIX] A method of forming a sealed connection between two structural members includes the step of -applying a coating of artificial rubber cement to the members and finally connecting the members together mechanically. In a lap connection, Fig. 1, a layer of plastic cement known as Thiokol is disposed between the portions 11, 12 which are secured by rivets, bolts &c. 15. Thiokol G-18 is first applied to the joint and air dried and, after a specified time, a second coat is applied until tacky before lapping the sheets or plates for riveting &c. Thiokol G20 and Thiokol C-207 are similarly applied. A construction is described wherein a fillet is used in the corner between plates at right angles.secured by a lapjoint. If the surfaces to be joined are aluminium. or aluminium alloys, they are first anodized; if polished steel, they are roughened by emery &c. A method of installing an aircraft window frame in a window channel or frame 23 is shown in Fig. 3. A U-shaped gasket 26 encircles the periphery or side edges of the window 22 and serves as a cushion or shockabsorbing member. The gasket surfaces are coated with Thiokol. A construction is described wherein Thiokol is used to fill the crevices formed between structural members. The Thiokol is used as a seal and as a corrosive inhibition. When the Thiokol G-18 is'to be used, a thinner such as Trichlorethylene or chloroform is used. Method of applying Thiokol to form the seams, Fig. 3, and fillets is described. The Thiokol or other equivalent synthetic rubber compound should not contain more than 5 per cent. to 8 per cent, of rubber since natural rubber products are affected by motor fuels.
