Abstract

513,730. Lathes. NATIONAL ACME CO. April 14, 1938, No. 11511. Convention date, Aug. 26, 1937. [Class 83 (iii)] Chucks.-In a multiple spindle turret lathe in which one of the two lower chucking devices is automatically actuated from the cam shaft of the machine, the remaining working portions are. each provided with an arrangement for hand operation of the chucking devices, these arrangements preferably being actuated by a handle lever to be used in common for all the working stations. On the drum housing 4 of the machine is mounted a. supporting arch 3 provided for each working station at which the chucking sleeve is not automatically operated, with a guide bar 5 on which is slidably mounted a sleeve shifter 7 and with an opening 6 for receiving a pin 14 at the end of a hand chucking lever 13 adapted to engage a pin 10 projecting from the sleeve shifter. Each sleeve shifter 7 is provided with an arm 11 and roll 12 which, if the chucking device is left open, is engaged by a cam 16 on further indexing of the drum, so as to close the chucking device. As an additional safety device each sleeve shifter is associated with a spring arrangement 27 tending to move it so as to close the chucking device. The spring may be released by means of a semi-circular plate 28 if it is required to keep the chucking devices open for a larger period. The lower chucking slide 20 which is automatically operated by a cam 23 may be provided with a hole 6a for engagement by the hand lever 13 if it is desired to operate the slide manually.
