Abstract

513,198. Spring motors. FRANCK, E. W., and REEVES, H. E. Jan. 23, 1939, No. 2325. [Class 10] [Also in Group XXXVIII] Relates to sound reproducing machines, particularly adapted for use in dolls, and consists in providing as the driving motor a spring motor having a winding key which controls the starting and stopping, starting being prevented until the key has been moved from the winding position. The driving spring 31, Fig. 5, anchored at 24, is attached to a spindle 33, which is geared through pawl and ratchet mechanism to the turntable spindle 46 and to a governor 54. The spindle 30 has a pin 89 which abuts against one side or the other of a stop screw 88 when the spring is either wound or' unwound. The parts 88, 89 thus positively limit the movements of rotation of the spring spindle 30 in both directions. Attached to the rear plate 23 is a spring 93, Fig. 6, carrying a friction pad 94 adapted to bear against a disc on the turntable spindle 46. A bowed spring 96 is also secured to the plate 23, and carries a member 98 having transverse arm 101. 102. The arm 102 projects over the spring 93 and 101 projects over an extension 62 of an arm which supports the sound-box. A cam 104 extends from the part 98 and is adapted to be engaged by a pin 106 on the spring spindle 30. The spring 96 normally holds the arms 101, 102 out of engagement with the parts 93 and 62. The winding spindle 33 extends through holes in the members 96, 98, the upper hole being large enough to accommodate a pin 34 on the winding spindle. The winding key, Fig. 14, has a bayonet slot 36 adapted to engage with the pin 34 when the key is applied to the spindle. The head portion 109 of the key is larger than the hole in the member 98, so that when the key is pressed on to the spindle 33 to engage the bayonet slot with the pin 34, the spring 96 is flattened, and thus the pad 94 is forced against the braking disc on the spindle 46. At the same time the arm 101 bears against the member 62 and holds the sound-box off the record. On winding the spring, the pin 106, is moved away from the cam 104, and when the key is removed from the spindle 33, after winding, the friction pad 94 is free to spring away from the brake disc, the member 62 also being released to allow the sound-box to be applied to the record. At the end of the playing of the record, the pin 106 engages the cam 104, whereby the arms 101 102 are pressed against the parts 62. 93 respectively, to effect raising of the sound-box and application of the brake.
