Abstract

513,184. Indicating-instruments. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. May 12, 1938, No. 14187. Convention date, May 21, 1937. [Classes 106 (ii) and 106 (iv)] The instrument comprises a sensitive element, a rock shaft forming part of a motion transmitting mechanism between the element and an indicating member, and a bimetallic spring applying a force to the rock shaft which is constant for all positions of the shaft and is adapted to vary with the temperature. In the altimeter shown the whole movement is carried by a frame comprising two plates 10, 11 held apart by spacers 12. A diaphragm 16 is carried by a rod 18 adjustably mounted in a hollow rod' 14 carried by the lower spacer 12. A rod 20 adjustably mounted in the centre part 19 carried by the other side of the diaphragm has pivoted to it one end of a link 21 the other end of which is connected to the free end of, a bimetallic strip 26 adjustably mounted on a rock shaft 27 by means of a rod 28 slidably mounted in the shaft and locked by a screw 29. The axis of the strip 26 is parallel to the lines of shaft 27. This strip varies the effective lever arm between link 21 and shaft 27 with the temperature. The movement of the diaphragm is further transmitted to a pointer 34 by means of a quadrant 31 on shaft 27 engaging a pinion 32 on the pointer spindle. A bimetallic spiral spring 39 has one end connected tangentially to a collar 40 on the shaft 27, and the other end to one of the spacers 12. It normally opposes. upward movement of link 21 and compensates variation in dimensions of the link 21 and a small spiral spring 38 attached tangentially at one end to a collar 37 on the pointer,spindle and the other end fixed takes up backlash in the gearing between rock shaft 27 and the pointer.
