Abstract

512,857. Electrodeposition of metal. NORRIS, Inc., E. O. March 22, 1938, No. 8776. Convention date, Oct. 14, 1937. [Class 41] Metal is deposited on a rotating cylindrical cathode 40 and is continuously removed as strip 70 passing over a rod 71 to be wound or a roller 73. Electrolyte is removed from the strip by a squeegee 69a. The stripped part of the cathode before re-immersion in the electrolyte passes under a pad 81 for removal of electrolyte and a stripping composition applied from a fount 84 provided with a wick 83a. Baffles 107 are provided to prevent access of electrolyte vapour to the prepared surface of the cathode before immersion, the vapour being withdrawn through a passage 113. The stripping medium is smoothed bv an oscillating brush 85 and polished by a rotary brush 95 which is maintained free from abrasive material by a member 105. The shaft 96 of the brush is mounted in bell-crank levers 97 pivoted at 98 on a frame 72; the pressure of the brush is adjusted by a movable weight 106. The frame 72, which also carries a cover for the tank, may be swung laterally to permit access to and removal of the cathode. The anode consists of copper scrap 34 enclosed between copper linings 31 on the cell walls 19 and curved members 32 each comprising a pair of nickel mesh sheets separated by a layer of felt. Electrolyte is projected tangentially along the cathode from perforations 27 in a pipe 24, and overflows into a tank 11 ; part of the eletrolyte drains through the anode material and through passages 28 to chambers 29 connected with the outer tank by adjustable valves 30, whereby the acid content of the electrolyte may be regulated. The electrolye passes by a passage 14 to a sump provided with baffles and is returned to the pipe 24 by a centrifugal pump. After operation the electrolyte is drained off and the cathode sprayed with water from perforated pipes 112.
