Abstract

512,835. Fabrics. FRENCH & SONS, Ltd., T., and FRENCH, G. F. March 17, 1938, No. 1449. [Class 142 (iv)] In weaving Venetian blind webbing &c., instead of forming all the cross straps 3 in each row from one set of warp threads as in the usual practice shown in Fig. 1, two or more sets of warp threads, for example three, are used so that the distance along which each cross strap is passed into the webbing may be increased and be independent of the distance between successive cross straps. Thus, after interweaving at 5, Fig. 2, with the weft in the lower banding, one set of warp threads may form a cross strap 6, enter the upper banding at 7, interweave therewith at 8, cross to the lower banding at 9 and interweave therewith at 10 and then repeat. A second set of warp threads forms the cross straps 16, 20 and a third the cross straps 13. As shown, where a set of cross strap warp threads enters an outer banding, it may interchange with the warp threads thereof. Thus at 7 the warp threads 5 of the straps 6 interchange with the warp threads 11 of the straps 16. The entering warp threads may however be superimposed on the other warp threads or both methods may be used. The cross-over parts 18, 9, 15 are cut as usual. In a modification, three sets of warp threads forming straps 27, 9 and 23, Fig. 5, and three other sets forming straps 45, 39 and 59 may be used forming reinforced parts in the outer bandings between 43 and 44 and between 47 and 54 &c. In this case, the two sets of cross straps instead of being staggered, may be placed in alignment as shown in Fig. 6. The intermediate section 64 may be of twill weave. Modifications are decribed wherein a series of lengths of cord braid or narrow tape &c. are used instead of warp threads to form the cross straps. A modification is also described wherein two series of warp threads are used. The cross straps may be wholly or partly weftless, or be woven with weft throughout. There may be only one row of cross straps The straps in one of the two rows may be slightly in advance of those in the other row and allow of a blind lath passing between them. The invention may be applied to webbing used in helmets for holding pieces of cloth or pith.
