Abstract

512,747. Height-measuring devices. FLEISCHER, D. Jan. 21, 1939, No. 2169. [Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XVIII] In a personal height and weight measuring machine the height and weight measuring means conjointly control means adapted to be adjusted to various angular positions for indicating the relation, for example overweight, normal weight or underweight, between the height and weight of the person. The weight of a person on the platform 13, Fig. 1, operating through usual weighing mechanism, displaces a rack 27, Fig. 3, a vertical distance dependent on the weight The rack sets a weight-indicating dial 29 read through a window 30, and also by means of a pinion 28 depresses a rack 33 connected by a pin and slot 43, 44 to a plate 41 pivoted at 11a upon a rack 11c. The rack 11c is set by means of a pinion 16 engaging a height-measuring member 11 extending above the cabinet and carrying an arm 12 which is lowered manually on to the person's head. The height is indicated at a window 19 on. a dial 18. If the person is of normal weight for his or her height the settings of the racks 33, 11c are such that the plate 41 remains horizontal. If however the person is overweight or underweight, the plate 41 is tilted one way or the other and one or other of two mercury switches 48, 49 is closed. A pointer 45 on the plate 41 indicates on a chart 46 the normal, under, or overweight condition, and the mercury switches when closed operate through relays to energize one or other of two electromagnets utilized after insertion of a coin to issue either ah overweight or an underweight ticket bearing appropriate indicia relating for example to diet. If the person is of normal weight the relays are not operated and a third electromagnet for normal tickets is energized. To prevent use of the apparatus except upon insertion of a coin a. pair of opaque cards normally obscure the height and weight dials but are removed by an electromagnet when a switch is closed by operation of the coin slide. To render the apparatus suitable for either men or women, the rack 33, Fig. 3, may be set to either of two lengths by rotating a finger knob 40, Figs. 1, 3, connected by a flexible cable to an interposer cam 38. The different lengths of the rack 34 affect the inclination of the plate 41 and its consequent indications. Instead of using an arm 12 for measuring the height of the person, the member 11 may carry a sight'passage 78, Fig. 9. When the sight passage comes opposite the level of the user's eye so that he may look through, his height is correctly indicated by the height dial 18.
