Abstract
512,371. Distilling hydrocarbons. SOC. POUR L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES AB-DER-HALDEN. Sept. 30,1938, No. 28442. Convention date, Dec. 13, 1937. [Class 32] Tar and like hydrocarbon oils are distilled with the aid of superheated steam so that vapours and steam only at a temperature not exceeding 250‹C. 'enter the bottom of a fractionating column from which condensates are taken off at different levels, cooled below 100‹C. and returned in part as reflux to a point in the column lower than that from which they were removed. Tar from a tank 5 is pumped through a vapourizing coil 8 in a furnace 3 into a still 2 to which steam superheated in a coil 11 is also led. The vapours produced are led through a pipe 17 into a tower B provided with plates 19, 20 from which condensates are removed through lines 22, 23 to coolers 26, 34 and receivers 28, 35, from which part of the condensate is returned as reflux through lines 30, 37, while the remainder is removed to storage tanks 29, 36. The top of the column is maintained aoove 100‹C. so that the steam passes off with vapours through a pipe 39, cooler 40, to a receiver 41, where water is separated by decantation, the light condensate passing to a receiver 45, from which it is recirculated in part through line 46 as reflux. In the distillation of crude tar the products may be fractionated to recover pitch, anthracene oil, middle oil containing raphthalene, phenols, cresols (from which the naphthalene may be removed by crystallization) and a light oil boiling up to 180‹C.
